Residents Of Cabuyao, Laguna Warned By Phivolcs To Prepare for The Big One Earthquake
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has warned the residents of Cabuyao, Laguna to prepare for the big one earthquake.
Dr. Renato Solidum, the executive director of Phivolcs and undersecretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has urged the officials of Cabuyao, Laguna to be more aware for earthquakes and to be well prepared.
The Phivolcs director wanted the Cabuyao officials and residents to increase their level of preparedness for the impending magnitude 7.2 earthquake since Barangay Casile atop the West Valley Fault.
On weekends, Solidum was the main speaker during the National Disaster Resilience Month in the city with the theme “Kamalayan sa Kahandaan, Katumbas ay Kaligtasan”.
The DOST Usec has elaborated how the magnitude 7.2 earthquake can affect Cabuyao as he refers to the powerful tremors that struck Leyte and Batangas previously.
“It is vital in the proper planning for the earthquake disaster to make risk (–foul word(s) removed–)sment by classifying the possible damages like buildings and other structures and to determine possible injured victims and casualties,” said by Solidum quoted by Manila Bulletin.
Solidum also urges the academe, the private sector, disaster managers, village executives, and city officials to prioritize the disaster preparedness to save more lives. He also noted that the Philippines was ranked as third among countries prone to natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, storms, floods, tsunamis, and landslides.
He also said that they will use science and risk scenarios for extreme and large-scale events during a powerful tremor to help the residents to be safe.
The volcanology expert also explained that the irregular movement in the West Valley Fault can severely affect Metro Manila and its nearby province. Big one earthquake could kill up to 34, 000 people and could injure more than 100, 000 people due to collapse building.
