Marawi Resident Leave Their Residences To Escape Firefight

The residents of Marawi City have vacated their homes to escape the unusual firefight between the Maute group and government forces.

On Wednesday morning (May 24, 2017), the firefight between the Maute terror group and government forces have already subsided. The residents of Marawi City grabbed this opportunity to leave the area before the shootout resumed.

The countless vehicle from the highway of Marawi City going to Iligan City has jammed due to the tight security during military checkpoints. The other residents have chosen to leave the city using boats.

A resident named Mohammad Nisam that numerous gunmen were still in the city, so they decided to leave their residences while the firefight has subsided temporarily before the shootout resumed.

Another resident named Akmad Ali said that they were unable to leave their houses earlier so they had pinned down by the battle. He also said that there are fatalities, but they were not able to look at them.

The business operations and school cl(–foul word(s) removed–) have temporarily suspended in Marawi City as the military forces remained in the area. The extended fighting between government troops and terror group have prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to declare Martial Law in all Mindanao.

The sporadic shootout in Marawi City has taken the lives of soldiers and a policeman. The firefight also injured at least 12 government troops in fighting the Maute terror group in the area.

Reporters and other social media personality have been prohibited from entering Marawi City to ensure their safety from the ongoing battle. The authorities of the city also confirmed that the activist had disarmed guards and free some of the inmates.
