Public School Teachers Not Anymore Required To Serve On Elections

The public school teachers will not be required to serve during elections as Comelec strictly enforces RA 10756.

Teachers from public schools all over the country will no longer be required to take on election duties in the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections on October 2017 and in succeeding elections.

The Commission on Elections will begin implementing Republic Act 10756, otherwise known as the Election Service Reform Act, which makes election duties non-compulsory for public school teachers.

Comelec chairman Andres Bautista said the agency is ready to enforce the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of the reform law.

The ESRA is supposed to be taking effect on October 2016 polls but because the barangay and SK elections is postponed next year, the law will also take effect in 2017.

“Because of the postponement, we will ensure that the law will be implemented staring next election”, chairman Bautista said.

The ESRA was signed into law on April 8, 2016 and makes election duties not required for the teachers from public schools but it was not implemented in the May 9 national and local elections.
