Kanlaon Volcano erupts in Negros Island Region
The Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology (Phivolcs) reports an explosive eruption of Kanlaon Volcano on Thursday afternoon.
Based on the latest from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), Kanlaon Volcano just had an explosive eruption on Thursday afternoon, February 19. Phivolcs announced the eruption through an advisory at 4:42 PM.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has not released further information about the volcanic activity as of this writing. Meanwhile, the Office of the Civil Defense cautioned residents about pyroclastic flows and ashfall from the eruption, which were reported to be drifting southwest at approximately 4:39 PM.
“Manatili pong naka-alerto, laging mag-ingat, at sumunod sa paalala at babala ng mga awtoridad,” the OCD said, reminding the people to remain alert, always exercise caution, and follow the advisories and warnings issued by authorities.
The eruption of Mount Kanlaon lasted for two minutes and produced a dark gray eruption plume that rose 2,000 meters above the crater before drifting southwest. Based on the volcano’s network of IP cameras, pyroclastic density currents flowed down the southern and southwestern upper slopes, reaching areas within one kilometer of the summit crater.
As much as we all know, Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 2, indicating increased unrest.
Meanwhile, residents near the volcano have captured the incident, and a video of the eruption has surfaced online. The footage was taken in Barangay Araal in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental.
