Authorities Arrest 2 Young Women for Selling Solvent in Manila

Two young women were arrested by the police authorities for selling solvent during a clearing operation in Manila.

The female suspects, aged 15 and 18, were arrested in Manila after authorities confiscated seven liters of solvent from them during a rescue and clearing operation along Recto Avenue. The operation was conducted by the Manila Police District (MPD) together with the Manila Department of Social Welfare.

According to police officers, the younger girl was caught selling bottles filled with a clear liquid that looked like water. The solvent was hidden inside her backpack, making it seem as though she was just an ordinary student.

Upon inspection, police discovered seven bottles containing the illegal substance. Investigators said the two friends had been selling solvent by small portions in areas around Tondo and Recto.

Many of their customers were reportedly minors who used the substance for sniffing. Authorities shared that some children are often seen with pieces of cloth or plastic containing solvent, which they inhale to feel lightheaded or “high.”

The confiscated solvent, packed in used mineral water bottles, was estimated to be worth around P10,000. Police reminded the public that solvent is intended for cleaning purposes and is not safe to inhale, as it can seriously damage the brain and other organs.

During the same operation, police and social workers rescued a total of 104 individuals from the streets, including the two girls caught selling solvent. Out of the rescued individuals, 36 were minors and 43 were homeless.

Seventy-nine of them were turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), while 25 were returned to their respective barangays.

Authorities once again urged parents to keep an eye on their children and guide them away from harmful habits and environments that could endanger their health and future.
