Lance Carr Speaks Out Against Exploitation of Rene Baterbonia’s Passing
LANCE CARR – The actor has criticized the spread of fake news and the growing number of people creating content to profit from the death of former Ateneo Blue Eagles player Rene Baterbonia.
He said it is upsetting to see individuals using the tragic loss of an 18-year-old for views, engagement, and financial gain. Carr believes that instead of spreading misleading stories, people should show respect and allow Rene to rest in peace.
At the same time, Carr said he understands why Rene’s family has started selling products such as perfumes, notebooks, and basketball jerseys. He explained that many people are aware of the family’s financial situation, and selling merchandise is a practical way to help them cope with the financial challenges following Rene’s passing. However, he stressed that his concern is with unrelated individuals who continue to produce content about Rene simply to benefit from the public’s interest in the tragedy.
Carr personally knew Rene because they both studied at Ateneo de Davao. During his college years, Rene was the captain of the high school basketball team, and they often trained together and played in exhibition games. Their shared experiences allowed Carr to get to know the young athlete beyond the basketball court.
He also recalled learning about Rene’s death while attending a Viva basketball practice. After seeing the news on his phone, he initially found it hard to believe. The official statement released by Ateneo de Manila later confirmed the heartbreaking news, leaving him shocked and saddened by the loss of someone he knew personally.
Carr is now preparing for the first-ever Viva All Star Games on August 16 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. He said the event has been planned for a long time, and he and his fellow players are excited that it is finally pushing through. He expects fans to witness a competitive and entertaining game as Viva launches its first all-star basketball event.
