Chiz Escudero Open To Becoming Senate President Again

This is what Chiz Escudero said about the Senate presidency.

19th Congress Senate President Chiz Escudero is open to retaining his position in the next Congress, and has this to say about the possibility

Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero would win the race for the Senate presidency of the 20th Congress if the election were held today, according to Senator Alan Peter Cayetano. The 19th Congress will soon expire, and Escudero expressed that he is open to retaining his current position; however, he is not campaigning for it.

“I will not shirk from that responsibility, let’s put it that way,” Escudero said.

He met with Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada and Senator-elect Rodante Marcoleta on Tuesday, but stressed that there have been no talks about or any ongoing efforts for him to stay as the Senate president.

He also commented on Senator-elect Erwin Tulfo’s statement about Escudero’s call asking for his support. According to him, it was not courting support. It was just more about putting in an effort to help the newly elected senators settle before their office starts.

Why did Senator Alan Peter Cayetano believe he would win if the elections were held today? According to him, he will have more than 13 votes today out of the 24 senators. The opening of the 20th Congress is on July 28.

Apart from Escudero, Sen. Tito Sotto has also expressed willingness to be the next leader of the upper chamber.

Meanwhile, regarding the impeachment of VP Sara Duterte, Escudero confirmed that the Senate impeachment court can dismiss the impeachment case even without a trial. To recall, the impeachment court remanded the Articles of Impeachment to the House of Representatives. Eighteen (18) senator judges supported the motion while five (5) objected.
