One of the Filipino personalities who is known in several fields is Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III. He is known in both the Philippine political arena, in showbiz, and in the music industry.

Tito Sotto’s Personal Background

Born on August 24, 1948, the Senator’s complete name is Vicente Castelo Sotto III. He is one of the four (4) children of Marcelino Antonio Ojeda Sotto and Dr. Herminia Castelo Sotto. His siblings are Valmar, Marcelino Antonio Jr., and Marvic Valentin or more popularly known in showbiz as Vic Sotto.

Sotto got his name from his paternal grandfather who is a former senator. His other grandfather, Filemon Sotto, has also served in the Senate and is one of those who drafted the 1935 Constitution.

With regards to his educational background, Sotto is a graduate of Colegio de San Juan Letran in Intramuros, Manila where he took his elementary, secondary, and college education. He took Bachelor of Arts degree major in English.

Tito Sotto is first known as a singer when he joined the combo Tilt Down Men together with his brother, Val. Later on, he became the vice president of Victor Music Corporation. He is also one of the founders of VST& Company, a Manila sound group.

Tito Sotto’s Political Career

Sen. Tito Sotto started his political career when he ran for vice mayor of Quezon City in 1988. He won and served until 1992. In the same year, he took his first senatorial race and secured the first slot with nearly 12 million votes. After his term, he sought for re-election but he lost placing 19th in the results. In 2010, he ran for senator again and won. He was elected as the Senate majority leader.

Sen. Sotto was again re-elected in 2016. He is part of the ruling party, the PDP-Laban, and he is currently the Senate President.
