Denise Laurel understood this misconception about her
Actress Denise Laurel reacted to being called “malandi, mataray” by some people as their first impression of her.
Denise has been in the industry for two decades already. She started as one of the teen actresses of her generation. After a long time, she returned to GMA for the series Prinsesa ng City Jail.
In a recent interview on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, Denise was asked about the statement made by award-winning director Cathy Garcia-Sampana about her.

King of Talk Boy Abunda recalled the time when Direk Cathy called Denise Laurel “mataray” and “malandi,” based on the article in Balita.
“Direk Cathy once said na because of your look, kapag hindi ka kilala sasabihin ‘ang taray-taray ng babaeng ito at ang landi,’” Tito Boy said to his guest. Denise corrected him saying that the first word was “malandi”. She said that Direk Cathy had that words about her because of her looks.
“‘Yong features ko, ganyan. When she said that Tito Boy, may nag-click sa utak ko. Kaya pala people—no matter how soft my heart is—they always come up with their own assumption. Hindi nila ako nilalapitan,” the actress shared.
Denise also shared that she would get hurt in love many times because of presumptions about her as sometimes people can be judgmental without even approaching her or making an effort to know her personally.

With what Direk Cathy said to her, she understood why she would get that kind of comment from people. Even though that was a negative connotation, Denise was able to find a way to flip it to favor herself. She said that she would milk from this by doing roles with that kind of personality.
In the same interview, Denise Laurel answered people’s “sayang” comments when she got pregnant at a young age and when she was in the prime of her career. She said that she did not imagine that it would be a big deal for many people because she is a character actress and not really the leading lady type.
