DTI Calls Out Viral Move It Rider for Not Giving Proper Change to Customers

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) called out the viral rider who intentionally avoids giving passengers their exact change.

Previously, the Move It rider exposed his strategy of claiming he had no small coins if the amount to be given back was P30 or less, even when he did. He explained that he saves the collected change to buy his meals.

While some may have found his approach clever, others were upset, prompting the DTI to take action.

According to the DTI, this practice violates the Republic Act 10909, also known as the No Shortchanging Act of 2016. The law requires businesses and service providers to give exact change to their customers, ensuring fairness in transactions.

Under Republic Act 10909, all business establishments, including sari-sari stores and government-owned and controlled corporations and government agencies performing proprietary functions, are mandated to give exact change to consumers and are prohibited from giving other forms of change like candy in lieu of monetary change.

The DTI clarified that the law also applies to ride-hailing services, even though these platforms emerged after the act was passed.

Violators of the law face penalties that include fines and suspension of their operating licenses. Repeated violations, particularly a fourth offense, could result in the cancellation of the business’s operating permit.

Despite the backlash, the rider stood by his actions and declined to apologize to netizens who expressed their disappointment.

The incident emphasizes the importance of ethical practices in customer service, pointing that even small acts of dishonesty can lead to consequences.

The agency reminds businesses and workers to adhere to the law, ensuring trust and transparency in all transactions.
