Motorcycle Rider Who Commits Traffic Violation Opens Fire at LTO Checkpoint in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro
ORIENTAL MINDORO – A motorcycle rider who had been flagged down for violations, suddenly opened fire at LTO checkpoint.
On Thursday morning (November 7, 2024), the Land Transportation Office (LTO) set a checkpoint in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro. A motorcycle rider, who had been flagged down for violations, suddenly opened fire on authorities leaving one person dead and two others injured.
The shooter, a 44-year-old male, was initially stopped by LTO personnel due to multiple vehicle issues and a lack of proper documents, including a driver’s license. According to Calapan police chief Lt. Col. Roden Fulache, the checkpoint stop turned into an argument between the motorcyclist and the LTO officials.
In the midst of the dispute, the motorcyclist unexpectedly pulled out a gun and began shooting. Angeles Marasigan, an 85-year-old former barangay captain, who was nearby at a local store was caught in the crossfire.
Unfortunately, she was struck by a bullet and lost her life. A bystander and LTO employee Gerardo Garcia were injured in the incident. Despite efforts by authorities to pursue the suspect in a hot pursuit operation, he managed to escape.
However, the motorbike used in the incident was later found abandoned in Barangay Malamig. At the scene, investigators also recovered several spent 9mm shell casings, likely from the suspect’s weapon.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of both LTO personnel and the public at checkpoints. It also points out the importance of enforcing compliance with traffic and vehicle regulations to prevent incidents from escalating into violent encounters.
The police are continuing their search for the suspect, aiming to bring justice to the victims and ensure the community’s safety.
