Fisherman Drifts at Sea for Over a Month, Rescued by Authorities

The Philippine Coast Guard rescued a fisherman named Robin Dejillo, who had been drifting at sea for more than a month.

Typically, fishermen start their days early, getting their boats and gear ready for a long day ahead. They use different methods like casting nets or using lines to catch fish, each requiring skill and an understanding of the sea.

However, life at sea isn’t without its challenges. Fishermen must be ready for sudden weather changes, which can make fishing dangerous.

Recently, a 50-year-old fisherman from Infanta, Quezon, was found extremely weak, dehydrated, and barely able to speak when he was discovered by the crew of M/B Veronica in the waters of Batanes.

According to reports, Dejillo set out to fish on August 4, but his boat ran out of fuel, leaving him stranded in the open sea. With no way to return to shore, he survived by drinking rainwater and eating fish and coconuts he found along the way.

For over a month, he floated aimlessly, enduring the harsh conditions of the sea. When finally rescued, Dejillo was weak and dehydrated. He was immediately taken to a hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.

The authorities praised his resilience, as surviving in such conditions for that long is extremely difficult.

The incident has raised awareness about the dangers of fishing and the importance of being prepared before heading out to sea. Having enough fuel, proper equipment, and an emergency plan can make the difference between life and death for those who make their living on the water.

Dejillo’s story serves as a reminder of the risks that come with the profession and the importance of staying vigilant and well-equipped while at sea. Fortunately, his month-long misery ended with his safe return, thanks to the efforts of the PCG and the quick response of the rescuers.
