Class Suspensions for October 5, 2023 Due to Magnitude 6.4 Quake in Sarangani

WALANG PASOK – Davao Occidental declares class suspensions across the province due to a magnitude 6.4 earthquake.

At around 7:21 p.m. on Wednesday evening (October 4, 2023), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a magnitude 6.4 earthquake in Sarangani Island.

The agency reported that the earthquake registered a “strong” Intensity 5 in several areas, including Sarangani, Don Marcelino in Davao Occidental, Kiamba, and Malungon in Sarangani, as well as the City of Digos in Davao del Sur.

Class Suspensions

Intensity 5 is characterized by strong shaking felt throughout buildings and violent swinging of hanging objects.

Intensity 4 was recorded over General Santos City, Koronadal City, Tupi, T’Boli, and Polomolok in South Cotabato, as well as Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental and Palimbang and Esperanza in Sultan Kudarat. This intensity can be described as feeling similar to the passing of a heavy truck.

Meanwhile, Intensity 3 was felt over the City of Davao, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat’s Kalamansig, Lambayong, President Quirino, Senator Ninoy Aquino, and the City of Tacurong, South Cotabato’s Lake Sebu, Tampakan, Santo Niño, and Surallah.

Class Suspensions

Intensity 2 was felt in Zamboanga City, Cotabato areas, Bukidnon’s Bagumbayan, San Fernando and Kalilangan in Bukidnon, Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental, Tantangan, South Cotabato, Cotabato City, Maguindanao del Norte’s Datu Odin Sinsuat and Sultan Kudarat.

Meanwhile, the City of Cagayan de Oro, Pangantucan, and Cabanglasan in Bukidnon and Cotabato’s Aleosan felt Intensity 1.

On Thursday (October 5, 2023), the Facebook page Davao Occidental announced the suspension of classes and work in all schools across the province due to a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that struck Sarangani Island on Wednesday evening.

Class Suspensions

Governor Atty. Franklin Bautista issued a province-wide order to suspend both classes and work on private establishments and government agencies, recognizing the potential risks and concerns raised by the powerful earthquake.

He also ordered the inspections of affected school buildings to ensure the safety of all students and personnel. The declaration was based on Memorandum Order No. 109.
