There are a lot of tales in Greek Mythology. One of the most popular is the story of Persephone, the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, and Hades, the god of the underworld or god of the dead. His immense love for him made him do such selfish act of taking her away.

According to the Greek Myth story, Persephone walked one sunny day to gather flowers with her closest friends, the Ocean Nymphs. Walking carefree, she walked away from her companions in search for the most beautiful flower. It was when the Earth opened.

Hades, in his golden chariot, appeared in front of Persephone and took her to the Underworld, his realm. Demeter looked for her daughter day and night. The weeping mother’s grief led to the withering of crops and land on Earth.

When the Sun felt sorry for Demeter for the loss of her beautiful daughter, it told her that Hades snatched her away. The goddess of crops went to Zeus and ordered him to bring their daughter home of the Earth will not blossom again.

Hermes, the messeger god, was sent by Zeus to his brother, Hades, who took his daughter. The god of the underworld agreed to return Persephone but tricked them when he made her eat six (6) pomegranate seeds before leaving. It would mean that she could not escape the underworld.

Demeter was enraged by what Hades did. To make ammends, Zeus and Hades agreed that Persephone will spend one (1) month in the underworld in a year for every pomegranate seed she has eaten. Thus, for six months, she will be with Hades. During this time, her mother would mourn for her and the earth will be dry. After it, Demeter will be very happy again and the earth will blossom.
