MANDATORY ROTC – Vice President Sara Duterte revealed that initial meetings on return of the mandatory military service training have started.
One the matters that Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio is vocal about even before she won the second-highest position in the government is her desire for the resumption of the mandatory Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). It gained different reactions and she clarified amid speculations when she was appointed as the secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) that she will be leading the basic education field. Recently, the Vice President spoke again on the resumption of the mandatory ROTC. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, she revealed that initial meetings about it have already started. The discussion gathered the officials from the Department of Education (DepEd), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and some lawmakers. According to her, it was clear to all of them who are present during the meeting that the mandatory military service is best under the higher education like before. She stressed that the basic education’s goal is to instill discipline and love of country among the students. More updates may be posted soon.

Personal Background
Born on May 31, 1978 in Davao City (44 years old this 2022), Sara Vicenta Zimmerman Duterte is the second child of then lawyer Rodrigo Duterte who later on became Davao City Mayor and the Philippine President and Elizabeth Zimmerman, a flight attendant. It is quite known to the public that she has a “love and hate relationship” with her father due to the differences between them and her disapproval of some of his habits but she is known as the favorite child of the former President.
Sara Duterte enrolled in San Pedro College and took BS Respiratory Therapy which she graduated from in 1999. In one of her inaugural speeches when she won Davao City mayor, she revealed that she wanted to be a pediatrician. She took law at San Sebastian College-Recoletos and finished it in 2005. She passed the Licensure Examination for Lawyers or the BAR exam in the same year. She worked as a court attorney at Supreme Court Associate Justice Romeo Callejo Sr.’s office.
In 2007, she married Atty. Manases “Mans” Carpio. They are blessed with three (3) children – their adoptive daughter, Mikhaila Maria “Sharky” and their sons Mateo Lucas “Stingray” and Marko Digong “Stonefish”.
Political Career
In 2007, Sara Duterte Carpio ran for the vice mayoralty seat in Davao City and won. Then, the mayor was her father. In 2010, she ran for mayor in the city and won. She holds the title as the first female mayor in the city and the youngest to have been elected in the position. She was appointed as the chairperson of the Regional Development Council (RDC) in December of the same year. In 2013, she did not run for public office and took the mayoralty race in Davao City in 2016 – which she won.
In 2022, she ran for vice president under the UniTeam and as the running-mate of Pres. Bongbong Marcos. She is currently the country’s vice president and secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd).
