DepEd Automatic Class Suspension: Agency Explains Department Order

Details about the DepEd Automatic Class Suspension – Still Not in Effect

DEPED AUTOMATIC CLASS SUSPENSION – The Department of Education explained its order that implements automatic cancellation of classes in schools once storm signals are up.

A new school year has recently began in the Philippines. Elementary and secondary schools under the Department of Education (DepEd) started their classes last August 22. Blended learning is implemented.

According to DepEd, from August 22 to October 31, schools will implemented distance learning which delivers lessons and classroom instructions through online or modules and face-to-face classes in some days.

By November, DepEd mandated the resumption of full in-person classes. According to the education department, a huge percentage of the elementary and secondary schools in the Philippines are ready for the face-to-face classes – which is contrary to the stand of some teachers’ groups who claimed that their schools are not ready for the in-person classes.

There are cases when classes are suspended – usually either due to a national holiday or to calamities or natural events. The Philippines is one of the countries that are usually hit by storms and earthquakes.

Usually, ahead of a storm entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the authorities releases details indicating the storm signals in the affected areas. It is to warn the people and encourage them to prepare. It also paves the way for the evacuation and the cancellation of classes and work if needed.

Recently, based on a report on ABS-CBN News, an order regarding the DepEd automatic class suspension was posted on the website of the Department of Education. However, the department clarified that it is yet to be in effect.

According to DepEd, the Department Order No. 37 was yet to be submitted to the Office of the National Administrative Registrar (ONAR) of the University of the Philippines Law Center. The order was only posted as an advance copy for the institutions with an electronic signature.

Reportedly, under the said order which the department decided to take down while the requirements of ONAR have yet to be completed, a DepEd automatic class suspension is set on public schools when the local government unit (LGU) is under at least typhoon signal No. 1.
