Benguet Farmer Opted to Use Cabbage Harvest as Fertilizer Instead of Selling Them

Benguet Farmer Chops Cabbage Harvest and Use it as Fertilizer

A Benguet farmer has opted to destroy his cabbage harvest and use it as fertilizer instead of selling them.

A farmer named Jan Slay Magno and his family has decided to chop up their cabbage harvest and use it as fertilizer. Magno filmed their activity during the last week of August when cabbage was being sold at P5 per kilo.

Magno said that the production costs outweighed the revenue.

“Nakikita ko [yung magulang ko] kung gaano sila naghihirap, ‘yung mga sakripisyo nila. ‘Yung halos maaga silang pumupunta sa hardin kahit malamig at saka nagagabihan sila don,” Magno said.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) claimed to be aware of both the farmers’ concerns about the price of their crops and the importance of provincial products reaching to reach markets across the nation.

DA Senior Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban said that no one from Manila, Pangasinan, and Quezon City can buy those crop products because farmers only sell them at their local markets. He also said that the agency has no value chain activities after the harvest.

Magno also pleads for appropriate pricing for their products apart from implementing transport mechanisms.
