Online Sabong: Duterte Doesn’t Want Lawmakers To Make Hasty Decisions On E-Sabong

Andanar Says Rodrigo Duterte Doesn’t Want Congress To Make Quick Decisions On Online Sabong

ONLINE SABONG – Communications Secretary Martin Andanar explained that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte only wanted the lawmakers to be cautious before deciding on suspending the operations of online sabong, reminding them that it helps the economy afloat amid the successive oil price hikes and COVID-19 pandemic.

The online sabong or e-sabong (electronic cockfighting) is a gambling activity that flourished during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Lots of Filipinos now are obsessing with this activity. Recently, a mom in Pasig regrettably sold her baby while a cop was arrested for playing it inside camp crame.

Last week, Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte instructed the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to conduct a 30 days investigation on the disappearance of 34 sabongeros.

Duterte also directed the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) to investigate possible violations of e-sabong operators. Digong’s orders came after the Senate passed a resolution urging him to suspend licenses of online sabong on March 1.

He is not keen on suspending the operations of online sabong because the government is getting billions of pesos from it. Based on a report from Manila Bulletin, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar explained that the 76-year-old president only wanted the lawmakers to be cautious before deciding on suspending it.

He added that the gambling activity helps the country’s economy afloat amid the COVID-19 pandemic and successive oil price hikes.

According to the report, Andanar said Digong only meant for the Congress to not make quick decisions without studying the entire thing. “Ang ibig sabihin po ng Presidente ay huwag magpadalus-dalos sa pagsuspinde nang hindi napag-aaralan ng kabuuan,” he said.

He cited PAGCOR Chairpersin Andrea Domingo about the contribution of the online sabong to the economy. He said, “[Malaki] ang kinikita ng e-Sabong at ang naitutulong nito sa ekonomiya.”
