President Duterte Denied Agreeing to Suspend Operations of e-Sabong in PH, PAGCOR Chief Says

PAGCOR Chief said that President Rodrigo Duterte allegedly denied agreeing to suspend the e-Sabong operations in the country.

Over the past few years, online sabong becomes one of the most popular gambling platforms in the Philippines. It has been based from the tradition gambling game ‘cockfight’ or popularly known as ‘sabong’.

Many people find it more accessible to place their bet at ‘online sabong’ rather than the traditional sabong. A lot of residents are already engaging in online gambling hoping to win a huge amount of cash.

On Friday (March 4, 2022), the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) chairperson Andrea Domingo claimed that President Duterte did not yet agreed to the suspension of online sabong.

Domingo’s statement came after having a conversation with Executive Secretary Medialdea. She said that Medialdea claimed that President Duterte did not yet agree to the suspension of online live cockfighting.

“Tinanong ko po sa Executive Secretary ‘Sir, pumayag po ba talaga ang President na i-suspend ang operations according to the news reports?’ Ang sabi po ni Executive Secretary, ‘Tinanong ko si presidente diyan, Andrea, sabi niya wala siyang sinasabing ganon’,” Domingo said.

The PAGCOR executive is referring to the statement of Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa and Senate President Vicente Sotto III who were claiming that the president agree to the proposal.

23 lawmakers have signed a resolution pushing for the suspension of  e-sabong in the country after the hearing last week.
