Tito Sotto shared thoughts on being a celebrity in the world of politics
Senate President Tito Sotto said that being a celebrity is “not completely an advantage” in winning the elections.
For several decades, the senator who is also called Tito Sen in showbiz has been providing entertainment through hosting and acting before he ventured into politics. He has been in public service for many years also.
However, based on the report from Inquirer, being a celebrity in the political arena is not wholly an advantage. “Advantage [na] kilala ka. Pangalawa disadvantage, baka kilala ka sa ano? Maraming asawa, baka kilala kang hindi maganda ang ugali. Baka kilala kang kaaway mo si ganyan, ganito,” Tito Sotto said.
He also said that this situation depends on the track record of the celebrity-turned-politician. “It’s not really completely an advantage. It’s a disadvantage depending on the record of the personality,” the Senate President said.
Tito Sen also said that many showbiz personalities and celebrities from other fields who joined the political did not find the success they expected. He said that he saw that in the records of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) since 1992 until now on celebrities, sports, and media personalities who ran for an electoral post, a bigger percentage did not win the elections.
“Sa sampu, mga seven will not make it,” the senator said. When asked if this proves that voters are getting mature already, Tito Sen said, “to a certain extent” but he said that it is still not 100 percent. On the other hand, he hopes that the sense of maturity of the voters will manifest in the next elections.
Tito Sotto added that although his generation will no longer be there in the following elections that will come, they were able to lay out a foundation that would be good for the younger generations.
