Actress-politician Aiko Melendez dismayed after some people removed her tarpaulins in Quezon City.
AIKO MELENDEZ – Famous actress Aiko Melendez cries foul when her tarps in Quezon City were wiped off and it was recorded in a video.
Last October, Aiko Melendez filed her certificate of candidacy (COC) for councilor in Quezon City’s 5th district in the May 2022 elections. She filed it at the Elements Tent and beside her to show support was her boyfriend and political handler, Zambales vice governor Jay Khonghun. To recall, she initially announced running for Congress.
This is the return of the 45-year-old actress to public service after 11 years. And during election time, tarpaulins with the big faces of aspiring candidates are scattered anywhere but there’s a law that must be followed. There is a law called Republic Act 9006 (AN ACT TO ENHANCE THE HOLDING OF FREE, ORDERLY, HONEST, PEACEFUL AND CREDIBLE ELECTIONS THROUGH FAIR ELECTION PRACTICES) or also known as the “Fair Election Act”.
Also, in the Omnibus Election Code – Article X, Sec. 80, it is unlawful to hold “election campaign or partisan political activity outside campaign period”.
Under the law, the campaign period is 90-days before the scheduled elections for national positions while 45 days for local positions. And for the upcoming May 2022 election, the candidates running for national and local positions can start their campaign from February 8, 2022, until May 7, 2022, and from March 25, 2022, to May 7, 2022, respectively.
On Instagram, the actress cried foul after some people were caught and recorded in a video taking down her tarpaulins. It was accordingly unfair on her part tarps with her face on it were singled out. She called out the people involved and contemplated the power they have to do such a thing unfairly towards her.
She called them out to give her a fair fight and stated, “Sa mga ka distrito ko na inuutusan ng mga me kapangyarihan sa posisyon para magtanggal ng tarpulins ko, Pag mali po ang utos wag sundin dahil labag po yan sa batas. Laban lang po parehas.”
One netizen who expressed support to her pointed out this perhaps the reason why those were taken down is that it is against the law. But the actress insisted that it is not. She is aware of the law and she follows the guidelines. She said in a reply to the comment, “Ang akin lang po bakit ung tarpulin ko lmg ang bawal ung iba nga po mas garapal ang kanila mam me position na po. “
