PAGASA Says Typhoon Kiko May Intensify Into Super Typhoon

PAGASA Releases Update About Typhoon Kiko

The state weather agency PAGASA reported that Typhoon Kiko may intensify into a super typhoon as it approaches the country.

On Thursday (September 9, 2021), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration released the latest update regarding Typhoon Kiko. The typhoon draws closer to the country while Jolina moves away from the country’s vicinity.

PAGASA reported that Kiko has been last spotted at 785 kilometers east of Baler, Aurora. It has maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 230 kph while slowly moving at 20 kph.

PAGASA senior weather specialist Chris Perez said that Kiko has a possibility to develop into a super typhoon although it was still far from the Philippine landmass. It might hit either the Babuyan Islands or Cagayan.

“We’re not ruling out the possibility kasi malayo pa sa kalupaan ng ating bansa at nasa karagatan pa rin ito,” Perez said.

Kiko will have its closest approach to the country on Friday evening (September 10) or Saturday morning (September 11). The weather bureau has also raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 in the following areas:

  • Western portion of Pangasinan (Anda, Bolinao, Infanta, Aguilar, Sual, Labrador, Dasol, Bugallon, Burgos, Mabini, Agno, City of Alaminos, Bani, Lingayen, Mangatarem)
  • Northern portion of Zambales (San Antonio, Botolan, San Narciso, San Felipe, Cabangan, Palauig, Iba, Masinloc, Candelaria, Santa Cruz)
  • Eastern portion of Cagayan (Buguey, Lal-Lo, Santa Teresita, Gonzaga, Santa Ana, Gattaran, Baggao, Peñablanca)
  • Northeastern portion of Isabela (Maconacon, Divilacan, San Pablo, Cabagan, Palanan)

The tropical cyclone may begin to weaken on Sunday (September 12) and would make a landfall in the southeastern part of China on September 14.
