Why DepEd Is Taking a Closer Look at Top Private Schools
DEPED – A surprise visit by top DepEd officials to a leading private school highlights the agency’s commitment to raising the quality of education for Filipino learners.
The Department of Education (DepEd) is strengthening its efforts to ensure that innovations introduced by private educational institutions remain consistent with the country’s learning objectives and safety standards. Through closer collaboration and regular monitoring, the agency aims to promote quality education while encouraging best practices that can contribute to the improvement of the national education system.
As part of this initiative, Education Secretary Sonny Angara, together with National Capital Region Assistant Secretary and Regional Director Dr. Jocelyn Andaya, made an unannounced visit to Sproutville International School in Bonifacio Global City on Friday. The visit formed part of DepEd’s continuing efforts to engage directly with private schools and assess educational practices that could support nationwide learning reforms.
During the visit, DepEd officials observed the school’s academic programs, Montessori-based learning environment, and emergency preparedness measures. According to the department, the inspection provided valuable insights into how private institutions are implementing educational approaches designed to enhance student achievement while maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment.
The agency emphasized that programs promoting creativity, independence, critical thinking, and holistic child development are important elements in shaping well-rounded learners. Officials noted that these educational approaches align with DepEd’s broader goal of improving learning outcomes among Filipino students.
DepEd also recognized that Sproutville International School’s early childhood education program complements the country’s existing educational standards. The agency believes that observing successful teaching methods and classroom practices from private institutions can provide useful references in developing and refining national education policies.
Aside from academic instruction, education officials witnessed the school’s implementation of safety protocols during a synchronized earthquake and fire drill. Teachers guided students through an organized evacuation procedure, demonstrating preparedness in handling emergencies. The exercise reflected DepEd’s ongoing commitment to disaster risk reduction and the promotion of safe learning environments for all students.
Moving forward, DepEd said it will continue gathering observations and insights from high-performing private schools to support future policy discussions. These findings are expected to contribute to the enhancement of early childhood education standards, improvements in school facility safety, and stronger public-private collaboration across educational institutions in the National Capital Region, reinforcing the department’s commitment to delivering quality, safe, and inclusive education for Filipino learners.
