Over 4,000 Filipino Nurses to Return to Jobs Abroad, According to DOLE

DOLE said that over 4,000 Filipino nurses are set to return to overseas job after losing their jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Thursday (May 13, 2021), the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Silvestre Bello III announced that 4,610 Filipino nurses will soon return to their former jobs abroad.

Bello explained that Filipino health workers are sought after overseas. He also said that the workers were not displaced but they are those whose contracts were completed and seen no problem with it.

“Hindi ito mga na-displace, ito yung mga end of contract. Balik-manggagawa ang mga yan, after a while babalik na po sila, so walang problema dito sa apat na libo,” Bello said.

The Health Secretary the United Kingdom’s employment cap of 5,000 Filipino health workers has been lifted. He also said that UK is asking to hire 2,000 to 3,000 nurses per month but expressed feat that the country may experience lack of supply.

Bello said that DOLE is considering to lift the employment cap for Germany.

“Siyempre pag-aaralan kung kakayanin dahil maliwanag ang instruction ng ating Pangulong Duterte na ‘pag-deploy mo OK lang, pero tiyakin mo na may maiiwan na sapat na supply ng mga healthcare workers’,” Bello added.
