CHAPTER 7 NOLI ME TANGERE

The novel is one of the connected novels that were written by the Philippine national hero Jose Rizal (full name Jose Protacio Mercado Rizal y Alonzo Realonda).

He wrote the novel to make Filipinos see the abuse of power the priests show during the Spanish Colonization period.

The novel has 64 chapters. We are going to read the seventh chapter.

Chapter 7 is entitled “An Idyl on an Azotea”. Here is the summary of the Chapter:

Aunt Isabel is a devout Catholic. She religiously go to mass every morning with her niece Maria Clara. After the mass, Maria Clara hurriedly headed home, which enraged her aunt.

Maria can’t wait to see her lover Ibarra since it was seven years since she last saw her lover.

Ibarra arrived and they spent their time reminiscing the past way back when they were kids. Maria looked past her life in Beaterio  while Ibarra remembered his time when he studied and travelled in Europe.

Maria criticized Ibarra’s departure, but the latter responded that he studied in Europe to give his fellowmen the education for the well-being of the country.

Their conversation halted when Ibarra remembered his dead parents. He hurriedly said goodbye to his lover to attend the fastly-upcoming funeral.
