The novel is one of the connected novels that were written by the Philippine national hero Jose Rizal (full name Jose Protacio Mercado Rizal y Alonzo Realonda).

He wrote the novel to make Filipinos see the abuse of power the priests show during the Spanish Colonization period.

Chapter 6 is entitled “Captain Tiago”. Here is the summary of the Chapter:

Captain Tiago is the only child of a sugar businessman in the municipality of Malabon. He finished taking the course of Logic with the help of a Dominican friend, who he served.

He has the appearance of a typical Filipino. His physique and features made him look less of an Indio.

He married a maiden from Sta. Cruz named Doña Pia. They were both diligent in their business, which made them wealthy and among the prominent families in the town.

From there he acquired the ways of the Spaniards on how he behaves, dresses, and lives. He is also a devout Catholic who worships all the saints. He also does under the order and wants of the foreigners.

His partnership with Doña Pia brought him a baby Maria Clara. His wife died from giving birth to Maria, who is currently under the care of his cousin Isabel, who helped him raise the girl.
