Southern PH Medical Center At Critical Levels, 9 Out Of 10 ICU Beds Occupied

SOUTHERN PH MEDICAL CENTER – For two weeks straight, the Southern Philippine Medical Center’s COVID-19 bed capacity has been under critical levels.

As the Philippines continues its fight against COVID-19, some hospitals in the country have had issues with capacity. A year into the coronavirus pandemic, some health facilities are still under critical condition. Among these hospitals was Davao City’s Southern PH Medical.

According to an article from, ABS-CBN, the hospital reported Wednesday that 92% or 9 out of 10 of their ICU beds are occupied. Furthermore, 75 percent of the isolation wards were already full.

However, this was still an improvement from last week’s 100% capacity. Unfortunately, a sudden influx of COVID-19 cases could render worst-case scenarios for the hospital.

Meanwhile, the hospital said it already had freezers for the expected COVID-19 vaccine for 3,000 health workers ready to get inoculated. According to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, the vaccines could arrive in February 15.

But, Department of Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire clarified that there was still no valid date for its arrival or distribution. Luckily, when it comes to vaccine roll-out simulations, Sec. Carlito Galvez Jr. said that it went faster and better than expected.
