Filipino Shoppers Flock to Bocaue, Bulacan to Buy Firecrackers and Fireworks Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

A lot of shoppers have flocked to Bocaue, Bulacan to buy firecrackers and fireworks for the New Year’s Eve.

On Wednesday (December 30, 2020), firecracker and firework vendors have already started to sell their products in Bocaue, Bulacan, which has been dubbed as the fireworks capital of the Philippines.

The stores are already operating 24 hours a day to make the firecrackers available to consumers at any time. Some customers came from their respective provinces and traveling a couple of hours just to buy one.

According to some vendors, their sales have started to rise after the Christmas Day. However, the coronavirus pandemic together with the inclement weather conditions and firecracker ban in the National Capital Region makes their livelihood struggle.

This year, aerial displays with price ranging from P600 to P20, 000 is the best seller. Fountain’s prices is ranging from P250 to P650 while Lusis is worth P50 to P500. Most consumers prefer to use fireworks instead of firecrackers to avoid injuries.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) advised the public and vendors that watusi, piccolo, five star, goodbye bading, and other powerful firecrackers are prohibited to prevent firecracker-related injuries during the celebration of New Year’s Eve.

DILG instructed the residents in areas under firecracker ban to use alternative noises such as vehicles, horn, drums, torotot, and other percussions.
