Former House Boy in Davao Oriental Graduate as Cum Laude at 45
FORMER HOUSE BOY- At the age of 45, tatay Jun has finished his college degree and earned praise after he graduated as ‘cum laude’.
Another man in Davao Oriental proved that poverty and age are not barriers to achieving life’s dreams, because while a person is still breathing, it is still possible to achieve the desired success.
According to the Philippine Star, Guillermo Bello Jr., 45, a resident of Mati, Davao Oriental, “Kuya Jun” graduated as “Cum Laude” in the Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Technology and Livelihood Education course at Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology. The commencement exercise of the said school was held this September 2020.
The challenges of life that Kuya Jun went through were not easy. He recounted why he was dropped out of school when he was in the Third Year of high school. It is said that his father got sick so he had to stop to bear the responsibility of their family, with eight siblings.
He served as a house helper to support his family’s financial needs. At the age of 16, he went to Cavite province to find a better job and a high wage. Fortunately, he has been a babysitter and has also been doing household works for 24 years.

In 2015, he returned to his hometown to enroll in the Alternative Learning System or ALS of the Department of Education (DepEd) for those like him who wanted to return to school. When he finished, he continued his college education, at Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology.
At first, he said, the program head of the course he wanted to enter was hesitant to accept him. According to him, he might not be able to take the course anymore because of his age. However, he was given a chance to be enrolled in the first semester, and there, he proved he could, because his marks were high.
Despite his age, his classmates and professors treated him well. Although his former professors were surprised at his age, he received nothing from them but encouragement to persevere and support him.
Kuya Jun currently works as an enumerator in the Philippine Statistics Authority. He is also attending a review for the Board Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers to be able to teach.
