Philippines Obtains Avigan Tablets From Jap. Gov For Clinical Trials

PHILIPPINES OBTAINS AVIGAN TABLETS – The Japanese government has provided the Philippines with their candidate COVID-19 treatment – Avigan.

Recently, the Philippines joined Japan to for clinical trials of their Avigan tablets. Earlier, the Philippine government received the tablets as part of the “emergency grant aid to countries severely affected by COVID-19”.

Sadly, the Philippines has fulfilled the term “severely affected by COVID-19” as it becomes the latest virus hotspot in South East Asia. On Thursday, August 6, the country surpassed Indonesia with 119,460 reported cases.

Meanwhile, the Philippines is hopeful for Avigan as previous trials had shown promising results against COVID-19. Furthermore, according to a report from ABS-CBN, there would be 100 patients intended for trials in the Philippines.

However, experts have warned that the potential cure for COVID-19 could cause birth defects. As such, they urged not to administer the tablets to expectant mothers.

Moreover, as per the report, the Japanese Embassy in Manila stated:

In response to the requests received from the international community, Japan has formed close cooperation with several countries, including the Philippines, to expand clinical research on Avigan as a treatment for this infectious disease
