Scrap Collector Turns Beggar Since Coronavirus Lockdown

Scrap Collector Turns Beggar Amid Coronavirus Quarantine

SCRAP COLLECTOR TURNS BEGGAR – As the Philippines was placed under an enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), thousands of workers have lost their jobs.

Big businesses such as malls were forced to shut down along with small ones such as junk shops. As such, a junk shop worker already living on the streets was forced to resort to begging as junk shops weren’t operations since the ECQ.

Larry Lim and his wife who recently gave birth made the streets their home since 2017. For a living, Lim had been scavenging items he could sell to junk shops. However, since the ECQ began, his primary source of income was shut down.

According to an article from Philstar, Lim said that it became even harder to get by the day today. Because no junk shops are open for business, he and his wife couldn’t eat properly.

Despite the hardships of begging for money, Lim stayed on the streets to provide for his wife and newborn child. Meanwhile, Jefferey Navarro, a person living with Lim and his family said they had a large pile of scrap collected since March.

They said the moment the shops re-open they would sell everything they had piled up. Since the lockdown, Navarro begs for money from motorist passing by and helps drivers park cars in front of a bank.

Navarro was previously a construction worker who also lost his job due to the quarantine. He said that he only eats three to five times in a week. Sadly, Navarro had yet to receive any cash aid from the government since he was not registered in Taguig.
