Triple Drug Therapy For COVID-19 Patients More Effective Says Study

Triple Drug Therapy For COVID-19 Found To Help Patients Recover Quicker

TRIPLE DRUG THERAPY FOR COVID-19 – A study showed that a combination of three antiviral drugs and an immune system booster helps COVID-19 patients recover faster.

Currently, there is still no vaccine for the new coronavirus. However, some companies have begun human trials for their potential vaccine candidates. So, in the meantime, experts have used several methods to help treat symptoms of the virus.

According to Dr. Kwok-Yung Yuen of the Hong Kong University, the combination of the HIV drugs “Ritonavir and Lopinavir” combined with the antiviral drug ribavirin and a multiple sclerosis drug called beta interferon showed promising results as a treatment for COVID-19.

Based on an article from CNN, the patients in the study all had mild to moderate symptoms of the virus. Moreover, they were treated in seven days after testing positive for the virus.

Yuen’s team gave some patients the HIV drug combination exclusively. Meanwhile, others were given HIV drugs plus Ribavirin and injections of beta interferon.

The study revealed that patients given the cocktail of drugs were cleared of symptoms after seven days. However, those who were given just the HIV drugs recovered in 12 days.

Additionally, those given the triple combination of drugs felt much better after four days. As per the article, the researchers stated:

Early triple antiviral therapy was safe and superior to lopinavir-ritonavir alone in alleviating symptoms and shortening the duration of viral shedding and hospital stay in patients with mild to moderate COVID-19,

With the new findings, a new hope for COVID-19 treatment blossomed. Aside from Remdesivir, the combination of drugs used are easily available and much affordable.
