OFW Vents About Philhealth’s Premium Hike On Social Media

OFW – A 28-year-old OFW in Dubai vented his frustration over Philhealth’s premium hike for migrant workers.

Lots of people mostly Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) react to the increased Philhealth premium for overseas workers. OFWs will soon be required a 3% monthly contribution to Philhealth before they get their Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC) from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA).

Section 10.2.c of the Universal Health Care act states that “the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) shall ensure that land-based overseas Filipino workers, whether new hires or returning (Balik Manggagawa), pay their PhilHealth premiums prior to issuance of the Overseas Employment Cet1ificate (OEC).” Presidential Spokesperson and former party-list lawmaker Harry Roque authored the Healthcare act.

In a previous article, Harry Roque reacted after Philhealth blamed him for the OFWs payment hike. He said the agency should be the ones to address the issue because he’s not the one who ordered the agency to increase the monthly contribution of the OFWs.

The lawyer also said that there are still corrupt officials who work at the agency. “Pero ‘yung tunay na sindikato, ‘yung matataas na opisyal diyan sa PhilHealth, nandiyan pa rin,” he said.

Based on a report from GMA News, Change.org’s online petition to repeal the measure has garnered 289,958 signatures as of this writing. Several OFWs took to the social media to air their frustration over PhilHealth’s premium payment hike.

A 28 years old OFW from Dubai named Charlie vented his anger towards to the Philhealth officials who updated the measure. He said they didn’t even consider the OFWs who have low salaries. The video has garnered 50 thousand reactions, 93,952 shares, and 1.1 million views as of this writing.
