I thoroughly enjoy skiing. The gerund in this sentence is “skiing” and it is being used as a direct object as it answers what is being enjoyed after the action word “enjoy”.

My favorite exercise is weight-lifting. Here, the gerund is “weight-lifting” and is used as a complement because it describes the subject after the verb “is”.
