PHIVOLCS Fears Possible Volcanic Tsunami & Pyroclastic Density Currents
VOLCANIC TSUNAMI – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) had evacuated about 8,000 residents of Taal Volcano Island following fears of an explosive eruption.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council, about 6,000 residents were evacuated from the danger zone by Sunday evening. Authorities stated there was a risk that the eruption could cause a tsunami.
Amidst Taal’s activity, PHIVOLCS head Renato Solidum Stated that “Taal is a very small volcano but a dangerous volcano”. He added that Taal was unique because it was a volcano within a volcano.
As the institute raised the danger level of the volcano to 4 out of 5, it meant that a hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days.
Areas within Batangas also experienced a magnitude 4.1 earthquake at 6:35 a.m. on Monday.
According to Phivolcs, the quake that hit a part of Batangas was located at 13.98°North, 120.90°East – 006 km North 39° West of Agoncillo. The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 008 kilometers.
Based on a report from Aljazeera, Solidum stated that residents have to be on alert because they could see an increase in the phreatic explosions. The Volcano spewed ash that had generated a 1-kilometer plume, triggering ashfall in nearby areas.
The volcano is inside a bigger crater or basin or bowl, which is why people would have to evacuate horizontally and away from the crater. There is water that would be hindering the rapid evacuation and that is why people need to get out of the island as soon as possible

In addition, several flights were also canceled because of the drifting ash. Government work in the capital and of all school classes in Manila and other affected areas were also suspended.
