Abusive Taxi Driver

A Facebook user named Michael Sorensen has shared the video footage of a taxi driver who charged its passengers with unjustifiable fare. Sorensen said that the driver informed them that the metered rate is P20 per 100 meters but the actual rate is P13.50/km only.

In the video, it can be seen that Sorensen together with his female colleague were having an exchange of heated argument with the driver who charged them with P1,700 fare, which usually ranges from P300 to P400 only.

“TAXI SCAM ALERT!

I always use my social media platform to promote visiting the Philippines by sharing positive experiences I’ve had in this country over the last 2.5 years. However, here is an example of a negative experience I just had – and unfortunately it is not an isolated incident.

Background info – Taxi driver flagged us at NAIA by saying “metered taxi”. We accepted, got in, and Aicy reminded him to turn on the meter. So far, so good..

Next, he informs us the “metered rate” is 20 php per 100 meters (the REAL metered rate is 13.50 per km). I did some quick math and confronted him with the error in price and he said “no, no..” so I let it be because I saw the meter was on. However, I noticed something looked different about the meter.. time and distance were showing, but no price. That’s when I figured out the price was covered in black tape.

At this point we were halfway to our destination so I snapped a pic for evidence and waited until we arrived at our destination.

Next, he asked to “borrow” 200 php for gas. Not a problem, as I knew the normal expected fare should be 300-400 (depending on wait time).

Finally, we arrived and this is the confrontation that ensued when I called the driver out on his deception. He asked for 1700 php. 1700 for a 300-400 php fare!!!!!! The taxi driver was getting aggressive in his posture and as you can see, unwilling to admit his scam and deception.

As he refused to remove the tape to reveal the correct fare, I paid him a total of 350 php and Aicy has since reported him to the LTFRB.

This type of behavior is UNACCEPTABLE, especially as taxis are often the FIRST experience visitors have here in the Philippines.

I’m sharing this to bring awareness to this issue I have encountered in various forms MANY times over the last 2.5 years. These taxi scams create a bad reputation for the honest and hard-working people in this country – who thankfully represent the majority of people I have met here.”
