FACEBOOK – The top court in Europe recently said on Monday that online sites must warn users to be cautious when using the embed Facebook like button.

A recent report in GMA states that the court said that users send their personal data via the embed like button that sites use. The embed button also sends user data to the US-based giant.

The court further said that the transmission occurs as users are oblivious to it regardless of whether or not the user is a member of the social media platform or has clicked the said button

Thus, under EU law, a retailer based on Europe and the social media platform are collaboratively responsible for accumulating data and send it in the Irish subsidiary of Facebook.

As for the users, they should be warned and will be asked if they allow giving their data to be gathered by the site. The site, however, will not be held responsible for what the internet giant will do to the data later on.

Based on the report, Monique Goyens of the European Consumer Organization said that the sites who will embed the like button will not hide behind Facebook any longer, further saying that the choice underlines the right for users to get information on which data will be sent and how they will be used by the sites.

Bernard Rohleder, the CEA of a German trade federation for online business called Bitkom said that the ruling will stack costly bureaucracy on firms without improving consumer protection.

Rohleder further said that it wouuld go beyond the US-based website and will affect all socmed plug-ins which are vital for many firms to expand their range on the web.
