Kapamilya actress Jane de Leon, hailed as the new Darna, has this background story before the iconic Pinay superhero landed on her hands.
Recently, fans felt excited as ABS-CBN and Star Cinema finally announced that Jane is the chosen actress to play Darna in a movie.
Initially, the role was offered to Angel Locsin but she had to give it up because of her back injury. Then, people behind the movie named Liza Soberano as the replacement. However, she also needed to give up the role because of her finger injury.
Finally, the search for the next Darna is over when Jane de Leon entered the scenario.
But who is she and why she was chosen out of 300 auditionees?
Based on the article fron Esquire, the new Darna is Jane Florence Benitez de Leon and her family calls her Chynese.
The actress from San Pedro, Laguna started joining beauty pageants at a young age. Jane won as the Ms. Photogenic when she joined the Little Miss San Roque.
Then, she was one of the semi-finalists in Supermodel Philippines back in 2013.

After joining pageants for just a few years, she started her acting career and joined GMA Artist Center from 2013 to 2015. However, in 2015 also, she decided to transfer to the Kapamilya network.
Under the management of Star Magic, Jane de Leon was able to do supporting roles in teleseryes such as La Luna Sangre as a moonchaser, Wansapanataym as Sassy, and The Debutantes as Jenny.
Her popularity took a higher notch when she played Maggie, the sister of Jericho Rosales’ character in Halik.
Jane’s hardwork in the entertainment industry paid off as she was recognized through the Netizens Best Choice Awards Council’s Modern Day Renaissance Woman Award given to her “effortless mastery and noteworthy achievements in arts and entertainment.”
ABS-CBN Film’s managing director Olive Lamasan shared the reason why they chose Jane. She said that it was a unanimous decision.
The producers were specifically looking for an actress who “possessed the right balance of youth, innocence, and strength to pull off the role,” based on the article. Apparently, they found this in Jane de Leon.
When asked who is her superhero in real life, the new Darna has this answer:
“My mom’s a very strong woman, who was able to beat hardships both in life and in health. She underwent four major surgeries and went through tough times when my dad was hospitalized up until he passed away. I know being a single parent is hard for her, but she manages to do it for me and my kuya.”
