Several senators are urging the new DICT chief Gringo Honasan to rush the implementation of free internet service in state universities and colleges (SUCs) nationwide.

President Rodrigo Duterte congratulates Gringo Honasan who was appointed as the new secretary of the Department of Information Communications Technology (DICT).

On Tuesday (July 2, 2019), several lawmakers are urging the newly-appointed DICT secretary to expedite the imposition of free Wi-Fi service in different SUCs nationwide.

Senator Sonny Angara noted that only 17 out of 112 state universities and colleges nationwide have free internet service as of December 2018.

Angara said in a statement that it was a low 15 percent accomplishment rate for the information and communications technology department.

“These institutions of higher learning are supposed to be priority areas in the roll-out plan but it appears that they have become last-mile targets,” Angara said.

The senator also said that the speed of internet connection should also be upgraded aside from setting Wi-Fi hotspots.

Citing Republic Act No. 10929, the lawmaker said that schools have priority sites for the imposition of the Nationwide Free Public Internet Access Program.

Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto is hoping that Honasan’s leadership could fix the bugs.
