Quezon City Council Approves 20% Discount In Food Establishments For Solo Parents
The Quezon City Council approved on the second reading the 20% discount on restaurants and food establishments for solo parents.
The Federation of Solo Parents estimated last 2017 that there are almost 20-million children raised by a solo parent nationwide.
In line with this, a proposal crossed the surface – the Solo Parent Welfare Act or the Republic Act 8972. It offers discounts and benefits to every solo parent whose suffering from economic difficulties.
The presiding officer of the city council in Quezon City, Joy Belmonte, said that the proposal will provide benefits to indigent solo parents in the across the city.

Based on a report from Manila Bulletin, Mayor Herbert Bautista‘s Vice Mayor, Joy Belmonte, stated that the number of indigent solo parents in the city are increasing and most of them are young single mothers.
“That is why we continue to carry out our advocacy of assisting solo parents,” Belmonte said.
She stated that those discounts include educational assistance for children of solo parents, medical assistance, and also for livelihood assistance.

According to the report, Belmonte expressed that she hoped to help those indigent solo parents who are doing everything to stay strong and stands alone for their kids.
Quezon City Councilor Raquel Malañgen is the one who introduced that ordinance.

Those food establishments and restaurants shall then be allowed to claim the discounts as deductions for the payment of their annual business tax.
The proposed ordinance was approved by the city council on its second reading requiring the food establishments to provide a 20% discount to registered solo parents every first Saturday of the month from 12 noon until 6 pm.

According to the report, the Solo Parent Welfare Act is set to be implemented by the Quezon City Social Service Development Department.
