Senator Nancy Binay Introduces Bill Seeking To Exempt Teachers From Income Tax

Senator Nancy Binay has introduced a bill seeking to exempt the teachers serving as members of the electoral board during poll exercises from income tax.

Binay pushes a bill aiming for tax-free pay for teachers supervising both national and local election exercises.

The Lady Senator proposed Senate Bill 1941 aiming to exclude from the computation of the gross income all compensations received by teachers from services during election day.

The lawmaker explained that the government should recognize the teachers conducting poll duties through income tax exemption.

“Teachers are often said to be heroes of every election season. They are often called on to be on the front lines, serving as members of the Board of Election Tellers (BET) tasked with operating the Vote Counting Machine (VCM) and assisting voters on Election Day. Unfortunately, the election season is prone to incidents of election-related violence and deaths,” Binay said quoted by Manila Bulletin.

About half a million public school teachers have volunteered to supervise the May 14 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) election.
