Risa Hontiveros reacts to Pres. Duterte’s statement.
RISA HONTIVEROS – The Philippine Senator Risa Hontiveros has a controversial statement as response to President Duterte’s “Wag condom, ‘di masarap” statement.
According to a report from the ABS-CBN, the President Rodrigo Duterte stated encouraging the people to use the free contraceptive pills that the government is giving out instead of using condoms.
The president indicated during his speech associated with the returning of the OFW’s from Kuwait, “May pills libre. ‘Wag ‘yang condom kasi hindi masarap ‘yang condom. Hindi, totoo. Hindi ako nagpapatawa.”
He added, “Ako, I’m just telling you that is why… biology. Alam ko ayaw ninyo ng condom so either magpa-injection kayo good for six months. Bahala ka kung ano.”
Thus, Senator Risa Hontiveros reacted to it.
Hontiveros, aside from being a senator, is also a socialist activist, politician, and journalist who was the representative of Akbayan in the House of Representatives of the Philippines from 2004 to 2010.
On her Twitter account, she stated, “Hindi masarap kapag may condom? Try HIV-AIDS and teenage pregnancy.”
In another post, she wrote, “The Pres seems to be overly concerned w/ pleasure. Nothing pleasurable about the rising number of HIV & teen pregnancy cases. By disapproving of condoms, he’s denying us the widest array of options to plan our families & prevent & protect ourselves from STDs & teen pregnancies.”
And lastly, as of this writing, Hontiveros expressed, “The President’s disapproval of condom use is also a virtual insistence that women should continue to carry the burden of family planning alone. This is unacceptable. Men must also do their share and be at par with women in sharing our family planning responsibilities.”
