Phivolcs Says Leyte Has Been Struck By A Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that a magnitude 5.1 earthquake has struck the province of Leyte.
On Wednesday (August 23, 2017), the province of Leyte has been struck by a magnitude 5.1 quake around 6:26 am. The powerful tremor was felt 5 kilometers northeast of Albuera, Leyte, according to the volcanology agency.
The quake has a depth of 5 kilometers with an Intensity of 5, which was felt by the residents of the neighboring town of Ormoc and Albuera. Intensity 4 was felt by the people of Pastrana, while Intensity 3 rattles Tacloban City and Palo.
Intensity 5 was described by the seismology agency as a “Strong” intensity that can make objects swing violently, which might cause harm to people. While Intensity 4 was described as “Moderately Strong” that can rattle wood-framed buildings.
As of now, there is no injuries or damage recorded due to the strong tremor felt in Albuera, Leyte but the volcanology agency has warned the residents of possible aftershocks.
Previously, Phivolcs has been urging the residents to be well-prepared all the time for the impending earthquakes to minimize the number of casualties.
