CHED: No Tuition Fee Increase for Yolanda-hit Schools

Commission on Higher Education (CHED) announces no tuition fee increase for typhoon Yolanda-hit schools which devastated the country particularly in Eastern Visayas (Region 8) last November 8, 2013.

CHED has yet to received letters of intent from 81 private colleges and universities seeking clearances to increase their tuition and other fees this school year 2014-2015.

Majority of schools in Metro Manila already announced seeking clearances to increase tuition and other fees, 74 colleges and universities sought an increase for this coming school year.

According to CHED, at least 353 private colleges and universities notified the commission of their intention for tuition hike. Last year, 451 schools in tertiary level sought clearance to increase their tuition and other fees.

CHED noted that 333 schools out of 353 intend to increase their tuition and other fees for all levels while 20 sought increase rates for new students and freshmen.

In a report from Inquirer.net, the Commission on Higher Education is expected to release the official list of schools approved for tuition and other fees increase by the end of the month.

However, other private colleges and universities devastated by super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in Visayas regions sought increase in their fees this school year.

Central Visayas (Region 7) which was ravaged by a powerful earthquake particularly in Bohol last October 2013 and with other areas affected by typhoon Yolanda announces that 21 out of the 126 colleges and universities has notified CHED for tuition and fees increase.

Western Visayas has announced seeking clearances for tuition and fees increase. The Region 6 which was also hit by Yolanda noted that 25 of the 78 private tertiary schools want to increase their fees.
