The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) reported that General Santos was struck by a 5.3 magnitude earthquake at 7:46 AM on Tuesday, September 4, 2013.
Philvocs stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 84 kilometers southeast of General Santos City. Intensity II was felt in General Santos City; Kidapawan City; Koronadal, South Cotabato; and Davao City.
The quake that hit the southern part of the Philippines was tectonic in origin, which means it was caused by the movement of a local fault. It had a depth of 143 kilometers.
Philvolcs clarified that aftershocks are expected but damage from the quake is unlikely.
