Student Slammed MRT 3 X-ray Scanner Over Damaged Laptop
A disappointed student airs dismay to the Manila Metro Rail Transit (MRT) station 3 after a laptop was damaged after undergoing an x-ray scanner.
On Wednesday, March 15, a student and commuter turned to Twitter to express her dissatisfaction with MRT 3 Taft Station. Allana Columbres posted on social media that an x-ray scanner broke her laptop in her backpack.
Columbres stated in a Twitter thread on Monday, March 20, that he was heading home at 9:00 p.m. when the incident occurred. She advised her to place her luggage inside the scanner and lay it flat to avoid damage due to the scanner’s small size.
“It was a rush hour but I made sure to be mindful of my belongings as I was carrying my laptop and other valuables with me,” said Columbres.
“When it was my turn to put my bag inside the scanner after long minutes of queuing, I made sure to lay it flat — anyone with a laptop would know to lay it flat on its back to avoid damage bc of how small the scanner is,” she shared.
A man allegedly aggressively pushed his backpack, which contained only a laptop, into the scanner, causing his backpack to strike the scanner vertically. He stated he began to fear at that point, particularly when he noticed his backpack was trapped in the scanner.
“The guards just watched, no emergency protocol whatsoever. They just watched as I struggled to reach for my bag. We all know that the scanner has an emergency stop button pero hindi ko pa rin talaga maintindihan kung bakit hindi nila pinindot yun kahit hindi na umaandar yung conveyor belt,” she said.
“They just watched and reacted offensively as I was panicking in front of them. We all heard a loud crack, and then the conveyor started moving again,” she added.
Columbres was alleged to have inspected his laptop after that moment and discovered that it was certainly bent and the screen was substantially cracked. She stated that when I was suffering a panic attack, the guards and others simply stared at me.
“Tiningnan lang ako ng guards at iba pang mga tao while I was having a panic attack. Tinalikuran ako ng guards, and announced on their megaphone ‘Ilagay niyo po nang maayos yung bag niyo para di kayo matulad kay ate dito’ (referring to me). Kahit konting sympathy man lang sana would’ve been fine. But no, they didn’t care even for a while. I felt so bad for myself,” she said.
The claimed laptop of Columbres was purportedly bought last year by his OFW father as a birthday gift to him. She mentioned that the laptop is highly sentimental to her, therefore she takes extra care with it.
“To other commuters, please be mindful of how you put your bags in the scanner. I understand that many of us are in a rush but please be considerate of other people and their belongings. You don’t know how important it may be to them,” she said in her tweet.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) MRT-3 apologized for the event, but stated that they were not to blame. MRT-3 denied Columbres’ claim that his backpack was pushed vertically into the scanner rather than horizontally due to the next passenger.
