However, there were certain issues that emerged online involving the Dubai-based Filipino designer Michael Cinco being accused by Miss Universe Canada’s team of sabotaging the gowns he made for their candidate Nova Steven. Steven’s publicist MGmode revealed that the gowns arrived late and some did not fit.

In a clap-back statement, Cinco reacted to the accusations against him by shutting down the claims. He refuted the accusations because the gowns accordingly arrived on time and it fit their candidate well. He also revealed a photoshoot he administered using his own money for Steven and called the sabotage accusation “absurd”. He also stressed this against the team, “YOU ALL ARE UNGRATEFUL, VILE and professional USERS.”

Apart from Cinco, another Pinoy designer named Rian Fernandez also revealed his experience with the same team way back 2016 with Sierra Bearchell and the worst one he had with Marta Magdalena Stepien in 2018. He according made 5 custom-made gowns for her for the prelims and finals but was not worn. And what’s even worst, the gown he made wasn’t returned to him.

And now, the organization has finally spoken about the issues and released a public apology to both Filipino designers. They expressed their sadness to all the people that have been dragged into this issue. The organization also admitted that their partnership with designers is giving them recognition and exposure in return.

“Like any organization in the pageant business, we enter into agreements with designers, in exchange for products we provide exposure and recognition to their brand. We recognize the significant contribution they make, not only with beautiful couture gowns, but also financially with work hours, time and shipping costs that they absorb,” says a part of their lengthy statement.

It also added that they appreciated the effort of these designers, however, they did not promise and committed themselves to use it. Accordingly, the decision is made by the reigning beauty queen on what to wear and where she’s most comfortable with.

“We specifically want to apologise to Michael Cinco and Rian Fernandez for any damage these recent incidents have caused to them or to their brand,” as per the statement.
