PNP Bans Protest During Duterte’s 5th SONA
DUTERTE SONA 2020 – Philippine National Police (PNP) said they will arrest people who will hold mass protests during Duterte’s 5th SONA.
Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is set to deliver his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, July 27. Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said the chief executive will be physically present at the Batasang Pambansa to deliver his speech amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Duterte will report the status of the country and his administration’s agenda in the years to come. Philippine National Police chief General Archie Gamboa called on protesters to just stage their protest online.
Activists usually deliver a counterpoint to President Duterte’s rendition of current events. It usually consists of stage presentations and marches. COVID-19 cases in the county continue to rise and to attend a rally will only endanger other people. In a previous article, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) prohibits mass gathering in the time of Duterte’s SONA.

Based on a report from Philstar, the PNP said they will arrest people who will stage mass protest actions during Duterte’s SONA tomorrow. PNP spokesman Brig. Gen. Bernard Banac said they will strictly implement the “no permit, no rally” policy.
According to the report, Banac warned that they will not hesitate to use force and arrest demonstrators who will insist on staging a protest. “If we do not see any indication of compliance or response, the PNP will be forced to arrest them and have them answer to local ordinances,” he said.
