Duterte SONA 2020: DILG Releases Advisory Prohibiting Mass Gathering

DILG on prohibition of mass gathering during Duterte SONA 2020 in an advisory.

DUTERTE SONA 2020 – Department of the Interior and Local Government prohibits mass gathering in time of President Duterte’s 5th SONA.

Philippine National Police chief General Archie Gamboa requested online rally during this year’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. This is because the country is currently being challenged with a huge health crisis and these are accordingly “not ordinary times”.

The number of COVID-19 cases in the country continues to rise. And to attend a rally, a form of mass gathering, will only endanger the people. With the SONA already happening on Monday, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) reminded strict implementation of a protocol prohibiting mass gathering.

In their advisory, it has stated the specific paragraph of the resolution regarding this where it said, “The Inter-Agency Task Force strongly reiterates that mass gatherings, such as but not limited to movie screenings, sporting events, and other entertainment activities, community assemblies, and non-essential work gatherings, are prohibited.”

For this year, the SONA will be held in Batasang Pambansa directed by Director Joyce Bernal. Due to pandemic, people can expect that this will be the president’s least attended SONA. Even the national anthem won’t be sung live. This is where he will talk about, in details, the COVID-19 recovery plan including the effects of the pandemic and how the government would address it.

To recall, authorities have seized 20 LGBTQI+ activists during the annual Pride March.
