June is the Pride Month in recognition and acceptance of the LGBTQ community. In this month is also the time where members march together expressing themselve fearlessly and calling the attention of everyone to their struggles.
During the last year’s Metro Manila Pride March, it has set an impressive record of 70,000 attendees despite the traffic and heavy downpour at that time. This is just to celebrate and express support for LGBTQ+ rights.
And for this year, despite the threats of coronavirus disease, the Bahaghari group pushed through a peaceful rally while observing health protocols such as social distancing and wearing masks. However, the peace is contrary in terms of how the authorities have responded to it.
Police officers came and the peaceful rally and protest over many issues that affect their community such as the anti-terror bill, mass testing, and jeepney phaseout, has resulted to chaos. Numerous were left injured and there were about 20 who got arrested.
According to a report from CNN, a police officer said that they have incurred a violation Manila Police District Chief Public Information Officer Lt. Col. Carlo Magno Manuel, the charges might include illegal assembly, unjust vexation, and violation of R.A. 1132 or the Mandatory Reporting of Notifiable Diseases and Health Events of Public Health Concern Act.
A lot of parties and personalities condemned that arrest of several participants telling that it was unjust and this issue sparked outrage online. Even Vice Ganda called out Mayor Isko Moreno to take immediate action about this.
Also, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray decry the arrests indicating why they have arrested the participants if they followed safety protocols. She furthered, “If proper health guidelines were being followed, (social distancing, mask wearing) why the use of force? Why the withholding of rights (witnesses said they were not read their miranda rights before arrest nor given reason of arrest)?”
